The perfect bit
Bits play an important role in the communication between rider and horse. They come in many different shapes and sizes. 'What is the perfect bit?' This is a question, which keeps many of us occupied. There are many opinions about what is the perfect bit. According to TRUST there is no such thing as a perfect bit, because no bit suits all horses. A perfect bit is a bit that the horse accepts and with which the rider has true contact to the horse’s mouth. The choice of a bit depends on the nature and training-level of the horse, but feeling, experience, and preference of the rider also play a big role.
TRUST Bits
Material, shape, and weight are important factors for choosing the right bit. TRUST pays much attention to these issues in order to optimize and develop their bits. All bits are handcrafted. This makes TRUST bits unique and of very high quality. What stands out the most is the blue flamed “sweet iron” combined with stainless steel. The anatomically shaped mouthpiece provides an optimal fit in the horse's mouth. The weight of a bit is also important, it shouldn't be too light or too heavy, nor to thick or too thin.
A TRUST bit is completely handcrafted. All components are welded and polished by hand. The eye-catching dark blue colour is achieved by heating the sweet iron briefly. The finishing touch: the size and brand name are stamped in.
Sweet iron
Sweet iron will rust when in contact with (air) humidity; the surface rust tastes sweet and naturally stimulates the saliva production. This will cause the horse to salivate more which will encourage the horse to take more contact. The process of rusting (oxidation) changes the blue colour of the TRUST-bit to a brownish-grey. A sweet iron bit will develop an orange-brown rust layer on the mouthpiece if it is temporarily not used. This is easily removed by wiping it off with a damp cloth. |
